AbstractBrazil has the largest moist forest biome of the world, the Amazon, known for its ecological diversity and richness. However, the growing threat caused by the deforestation may cause extinction of species besides playing a role on global warming. The degradation in the Amazon forest is a result of logging and fires. The tracking of such impacts is accomplished by means of techniques using satellite images that have been tested for change detection and area quantification. Image processing techniques have been developed to detect and map the changes in the landscape. This paper focus on the detection of changes occurred during the 2000-2008 time frame in Acre State. We used Landsat TM images for change detection, based on the image-difference and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The survey was validated with in situ data. The Isoseg classification applied on difference-images produced the best results with a kappa value equal to 0,96, while NDVI showed kappa of 0,87.
